Dr. Tan Yeng May Publishes in Research in International Business and Finance

The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates Assistant Prof. Dr. Tan Yeng May from the School of Economics and Management on her newest publication on the Research in International Business and Finance (RIBAF), an SSCI Q1 journal with the latest impact factor of 6.5. This article is also co-authored by Sii Yew Hei, a graduate of the class of 2022 from the School of Computing and Data Science, XMUM.

The article entitled “Performance of ESG-Integrated Smart Beta Strategies in Asia-Pacific Stock Markets” investigates the performance of investment strategies that incorporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) factors in five Asia-Pacific stock markets of Australia, Mainland China, Hong Kong, Malaysia, and Singapore. The authors utilize a proprietary ESG rating database containing monthly firm-specific data. They combine positive screening and the smart beta approach to evaluate the performance of ESG-based equity portfolios and compare them with traditional portfolios. The key findings indicate that high-ESG-rated portfolios do not offer superior risk-adjusted returns compared to lower-rated portfolios. As such, it may be premature to conclude that investors can ‘do well while also doing good’.
