The Masterclass & Film Screening by Chinese Film Director Xie Fei was held successfully from 21 to 22 March at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM).
The event was organized by XMUM’s School of Communication, in collaboration with the Center for ASEAN and Chinese Screen Studies (CACSS), and Xiamen University’s School of Film, along with its Film Museum and Film Archive Studies Center.
Over the course of two days, the exhibition invited renowned Chinese Film Director Xie Fei to showcase the restored versions of his four classic films: “A Mongolian Tale”, “A Girl from Hunan”, “Woman Sesame Oil Maker”, and “Black Snow”.
The event kicked off with an opening speech by Assoc. Prof. Wang Changsong, Dean of XMUM’s School of Communication.

During the opening ceremony, Xie Fei donated digital copies of the four films screened at the event, as well as “Our Farmland” and “Song of Tibet”, to XMUM.

The screening of “A Mongolian Tale” received enthusiastic acclaim from the audience, marking a successful start to the event.
Following the screening, Xie Fei delivered a speech titled “Cinematic Arts and Cultural Diversity”, sharing his understanding of cinematic art.

Xie Fei emphasized the three crucial values of art film, which are cognitive value, spiritual value, and aesthetic value.
“Movies serve as entertainment and commodities, but more importantly, they are products of cultural art. Good works can help us understand diverse cultures," he shared.
“The vitality of art films is enduring. As long as a film possesses quality and cultural value, it can continue to be disseminated.”
The event also featured a post-screening discussion where Xie Fei engaged with the audience, fostering an enriching exchange of ideas and perspectives.

Xie Fei (Chinese: 谢飞) is a Chinese film director, screenwriter, producer, film professor and film critic. He is a Silver Bear winner at the 40th Berlin Film Festival, a Golden Bear winner at the 43rd Berlin Film Festival, and the Best Director in the 19th Monteal International Film Festival.
