SEPANG: The Xiamen University Malaysia Journalism department has published their student-run periodical newsletter after months of editorial work.

The newsletter, aptly called “X-Pression”, aimed to record the events that transpired the entirety of the September 2021 semester and featured stories fully written by student reporters.

It was the product of an editorial committee that consisted of 15 journalism students.

Journalism Head of Department Associate Professor Dr Wang Changsong said that this edition sustains the tradition of X-Pression and adds decent tone of professional expression which reflects practical skills on news reporting and editing.

“It may motivate junior students to integrate theoretical and professional training with a real-product outcome,” Wang said.

X-Pression editor Sean Elijah Tan said the September 2021 edition of the newsletter was an effort to revive it after editorial work stopped due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

“Students need a platform to practice their journalistic skills. As Journalism Student Council president, I felt that it was my responsibility to come up with a platform to hone their hard-earned talents,” he said.

Sean also added that the newsletter wouldn’t be possible without the efforts put in by the editorial committee and the help provided by the journalism department’s lecturers, namely Dr Sushma, Mr Chandra, Mr Afiq, and Ms Tang Ying Ying.

X-Pression layout artist Ng Jia Yin said that the preservation of the newsletter would benefit future journalism students.

“As I am going to graduate soon, I hope X-Pression can last long so that alumni could read more about all the exciting events that happen around the campus. It is also a great platform to train future journalists,” Jia Yin said.
