Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin Wins First Prize in Global Development Awards Competition 2020

The Research Management Center congratulates Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin, an Assistant Professor of XMUM School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, for winning the First Prize of Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development under Global Development Awards Competition 2020. 

This year, the Competition received 78 applications from 30 countries competing under the theme “Unpacking the health-environment-economic wellbeing nexus”.

With his project “Development of a Multi-Objective Life Cycle Eco-Efficiency Optimization Model for Formulating a Sustainable Municipal Solid Waste Management Policy Framework”, Dr. Vincent Woon aims to contribute to the formulation of new recommendations for municipal solid waste management policy framework and the building of a circularity waste strategy, promoting a resource-efficient and greener economy in Malaysia.

This project is a collaboration with Dr. Liew Peng Yen from Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia.

Founded in 2001, the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development is a competitive research grant program under the Global Development Awards Competition with support from the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan. Apart from receiving a research grant of US$ 30,000, the first prize winner will be paired with a world-class academic in their research area as his/her Scientific and Technical Advisor.

About Dr Vincent Woon Kok Sin

 

Dr. Vincent Woon received his PhD in Environmental Engineering from Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and joined Xiamen University Malaysia as an Assistant Professor in 2019. With 10-year academic and industry experiences in environmental management and green city planning, his research interests include carbon footprint analysis, life cycle assessment and life cycle costing of a product or process, recycling of resources from solid waste, green township and building development, and energy optimization. During the United Nations Conference of the Parties Marrakech 2016 (COP22), he presented a speech at Malaysia Pavilion on behalf of Malaysia under the invitation of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. He is also a Certified GreenRE Manager of REHDA Malaysia.
