Innovation Talk Series #14 | Protecting Local Rivers via Effective Microorganism

2019-12-26

Innovation Talk Series #14 was held on 18 December 2019 by Innovation Center, with Jordan Ng invited as the guest speaker. Concerned that the importance of Klang River has been undervalued by the local community, in 2016 he founded Kelab Warisan Sungai Klang (Klang River Heritage Club, or KWSK), a non-profit organization dedicated to protection and preservation of the River for future generations.

In this public talk, Jordan Ng shared his desire to revive Klang River and his experience in using effective microorganism (EM) for environmental protection. To improve the water quality of Klang River as a habitat for creatures and plants, the club has come across innovative research ways of using EM mudballs - a technology developed by University of the Ryukyus, Japan in 1980s - to turn the River into a thriving hub not only for local citizens but also for the wildlife. The club has also organized activities such as mudballs making demonstration, educational talks, heritage walk and gotong-royong’ (cooperative practices) to increase the public’s awareness and participation, which have been proved to be effective.

Toward the end of the sharing session, Jordan Ng demonstrated how to prepare the EM mudballs and invited audiences to have a try. The basic ingredients of the EM mudballs are flour (or rice bran), brown sugar and an enzyme made from fruit peels, which take a minimum of two weeks of fermentation before ready for use.

KWSK will collaborate with Water For Future (a corporate social responsibility initiative) on a project named “Join the Mudball Fight 2020” to clean up Klang River on 12 January 2020 at Kota Bridge, Klang. Please find more information on www.waterforfuture.org.

Jordan Ng was delivering a speech to the audience.

The students were invited to have a try making mudballs with flour, brown sugar and enzyme made from fruit peels.
