Innovation Talk Series #12 was held on 19 July 2019 by Innovation Center and Research Management Center to introduce visual quality assessment and its applications to XMUM students and staff. This public talk was hosted by Dr. Xiao Han, Head of ICT Programmes of XMUM.
Prof. Ngan King Ngi was invited as a guest speaker to the public talk. Prof. Ngan is currently a Distinguished Professor at University of Electronic Science and Technology of China in Chengdu, a member of the National Thousand Talents Plan and an Emeritus Professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Previously he was a Chair Professor at Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, and the University of Western Australia in Australia.
According to Prof. Ngan, subjective visual quality evaluation plays an important role in designing high-quality visual signal processing applications such as video coding, video streaming and image retargeting. In his speech, he described the subjective testing procedure for visual quality assessment with retargeted image as an example. He also explained how an objective quality metric can designed to assess the subjective quality of retargeted images, which is then extended to video images. His public talk also focused on the use of visual quality metric in video coding.
