2021 Stellar Prize Celebrates the Talent of XMUM Communications Students

2021-12-28

The fourth Stellar Prize ceremony was successfully held on 18 December 2021, featuring 20 different awards for Journalism and Advertising students of Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM).

To showcase students talent in writing, photography, videography and graphic design, this year’s Stellar Prize features various award categories, including Best News Story, Best Design Innovation, Best TV Commercial and Best Covid-19 Pandemic Snapshot.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Zhang Ying, the Assistant President of XMUM, gave the opening speech during the online ceremony.

"Today is a day of joy because together we will remember many of the moving stories that we have experienced in the past year of your studies at Xiamen University Malaysia. As we prepare for the new year, we should welcome new opportunities, new challenges, new solutions, and new heights," said Dr. Zhang.

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Wang Changsong, Head of Department of Journalism and Advertising, was also present during the event and gave a speech.

"There are diverse opportunities to nurture ourselves for the quality of industry-readiness. The Stellar Prize would always be one of the platforms which showcase such qualities," said Dr. Wang.

Dr. Wang Changsong also introduced the newly launched postgraduate programme – Master of Communication and Culture.

One of the biggest winners this year was Jorge Lim Yi Cheng, a first-year student from the Advertising Programme, who won both the Best TV Commercial Award and the Best Cinematography Award.

"I have always admired what the Stellar Prize stands for, and how it gives opportunities for students to become the creators of their own story. Being nominated was already very exciting, but ending up winning two award categories was truly a great honour of mine. It was surreal," he said in the interview.

An annual award ceremony for Journalism and Advertising students of XMUM, this year the Stellar Prize accepted submissions from communications students of other universities for the first time.

The event organising chairperson Sean Elijah Tan said the event lived up to its reputation and expectation.

"The 2021 Stellar Prize is now successfully over. I think the hard work that the committee members displayed over these past few months have not gone to waste. They are the event's true MVPs.

"I hope that the Stellar Prize will see greater heights in the future. To the future organising committee, I wish you guys all the best," he said.
