The Innovation and Entrepreneurship Centre congratulates a group of undergraduate students for winning the Grand Prize in 2024 Create for China Student Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition national final, with their project "Algae Rocket".
Organized by China Employment magazine, the competition seeks to ignite university students' passion for innovation and entrepreneurship by encouraging them to tackle real-world challenges through creative projects.
Algal blooms have become a pressing global issue, threatening water quality, aquatic ecosystems, human health, and the development of aquaculture. To address this challenge, the Aqua-Rocket Integrated Algae Data Monitoring and Underwater Sampling System offers an innovative solution. The system integrates real-time data collection, anomaly detection, and model-based evaluation, delivering precise and timely insights for managing water resources effectively. Designed to assess algal blooms and analyze water quality in complex environments such as lakes, rivers, and coastal areas, Aqua-Rocket supports sustainable environmental protection and emergency response, ushering in a new era of intelligent water quality monitoring and ecosystem management.
The team comprises students from diverse academic backgrounds, including Software Engineering, Mathematics, Chemical Engineering, Marine Biotechnology, and Accounting. The team members are: Li Boyue (Team Leader), Liu Jintao, Lan Yichen, Zeng Guimei, Bai Jianing, Vivian Foong Chee Yan, Wong Yuxin, Pan Yuhan, Huang Xueyan, Chen Rujia, Li Yahan, Zhong Xinpeng, Chia Ee Jie, and Lee Jiawen.
The project team extends heartfelt gratitude to their four instructors for their invaluable guidance. Dr. Ng Chuck Chuan from the China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences (CAMS) and Dr. Saif Kifah from the School of Computing and Data Science played key roles in shaping the project. Additional support was provided by Dr. Tan Suh Nih and Prof. Han Lei, also from CAMS.
Five students and two instructors represented the team in the competition. Reflecting on the achievement, Li Boyue, the team leader, remarked: "This award not only validates our team's efforts but also strengthens our resolve to pursue innovation. Moving forward, we will continue enhancing our technical skills, refining our system's features, and contributing meaningfully to the industry's growth."
