On 16 December 2024, 29 students from Department of Traditional Chinese Medicine (2021/02 and 2021/04 intake), along with two graduate students from Yunnan University of Chinese Medicine, visited the Eu Yan Sang Pharmaceutical Factory in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The visit was led by Dr. Chep Lee Lu Siang.
Founded in 1879 by Mr. Ye Guang, Eu Yan Sang has grown from a small herbal shop into a leading global brand in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Its pharmaceutical factory, established in 1980, serves as a key manufacturing hub and holds GMP and ISO 9001 certifications. The factory employs advanced technologies, including High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Thin Layer Chromatography (TLC), Infrared Spectroscopy (IR), and Chinese medicine fingerprinting, to ensure product quality and efficacy.
The visit began with a warm welcome from the factory’s manager, Mr. John Lim, and quality control head, Madam Cheang Siew Chan. Madam Cheang shared an overview of the company’s history, manufacturing processes, and quality assurance measures. Students were introduced to the three rounds of rigorous testing each batch of products undergoes to ensure safety, focusing on the detection of heavy metal and microbial contamination.
During the tour, students donned sterile clothing and observed the production process firsthand. They learned how raw herbs are processed, active ingredients extracted, and finished products like Black Chicken Bai Feng Wan packaged with precision. Despite the factory’s moderate size, it supplies products to Eu Yan Sang stores across Malaysia and international markets.
The visit also included a tour of the factory’s laboratory, where students gained insight into the meticulous testing procedures that ensure product safety and consistency. The advanced research and quality control techniques left a deep impression on the students.
