The symphonic poem drama "Kah Kee Letters · 2963" premiered at Xiamen University Malaysia on September 27, 2024, as part of the memorial program celebrating the 150th anniversary of Mr. Tan Kah Kee's birth.
Created and directed by China's national first-class director Wang Gen, in collaboration with the Xiamen Alumni Association Entrepreneur Branch of Xiamen University, "Kah Kee Letters · 2963" featured the Xiamen Philharmonic Orchestra and integrated various art forms, including music, recitation, dance-drama, and 24 festive drum performances. The production vividly portrayed Tan Kah Kee's extraordinary life story within a 90-minute timeframe.
The performance commenced with the rhythmic beats of the 24 festive drums, narrating the life of Tan Kah Kee, the founder of Xiamen University. The intertwining of music and storyline created a powerful experience for the audience.
Set in late 19th-century China, the production highlighted Tan Kah Kee's commitment to education and community service. Born in 1874 in Jimei, Fujian, he funded over a hundred schools, embodying the essence of nurturing future generations. His famous declaration, "I would rather see my business close than Xiamen University shut down," reflects his dedication.
During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Tan Kah Kee mobilized over 3,200 overseas Chinese youth to protect the vital supply route known as the "Lifeline of the War". The actors passionately conveyed these stories, emphasizing the message, "Without sacrifice, there can be no peace today."
The title "2963" refers to the asteroid named "Tan Kah Kee Star", honoring his contributions to education. Zeng Tong, president of the Xiamen University Alumni Association of Entrepreneurs, explained that the play's concept originated during the university's centennial celebrations in 2021. The premiere at Xiamen University Malaysia aims to inspire younger generations to carry forward Tan Kah Kee's spirit.
According to Daryl Tan, Tan Kah Kee's great-grandson, the return of Xiamen University to Malaysia, over 90 years since its founding, underscores his enduring legacy. He believes that events like the premiere of "Kah Kee Letters · 2963" help bridge the connection between the people of Malaysia and China.
