A3 Library Opens to Welcome Students
The A3 Library of Xiamen University Malaysia soft-launched on 26 May 2023, accommodating staff and students’ needs for study and research while providing comprehensive services for knowledge exchange.
Donated by Mr. Robert Kuok Hock Nien, the library building is named "People’s Great Hall (百姓大楼)", in line with his wish that it become a hub of knowledge for everyone to learn and enjoy.
Located in the center of the main building block, facing the main gate of the university, it is a nine-story building, with the ability to house more than 1 million books and journals and contains over 2,000 seats.
It is worth mentioning that Tan Kah Kee Study, a multifunctional space combining exhibition and library functions, is set up in the library to showcase rich collections of historical records and archival documents related to Mr. Tan Kah Kee and his era.
XMUM Team Publishes in Science
On 17 November 2023, Hoy Zheng Xuan (master student, the first author) and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin (the corresponding author) from the Department of New Energy Science and Engineering published their paper "Curbing Global Solid Waste Emissions toward Net-zero Warming Futures" in Science and featured in the cover image.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Chin Wen Cheong from the Department of Mathematics co-authored this publication.
It is a collaborative project with Dr. Fan Yee Van from the Brno University of Technology, Czech Republic, and Prof. Yoo Seung Jick of Sookmyung Women's University, South Korea.
This achievement marks a major breakthrough for XMUM in the area of research. Since 1970, only three research teams from Malaysia have published in Science as the first or corresponding authors.
10+2 XMUM Researchers Featured Among World’s Top 2% Scientists by Stanford University
10 XMUM faculty members and 2 professors seconded from XMU being listed among the prestigious world’s top 2% most-cited scientists in the newly released metrics compiled by Stanford University published on 4 October 2023.
They are from School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences, Department of Physics, School of Electrical and Artificial Intelligence, School of Computing and Data Science, School of Traditional Chinese Medicine, and School of Foundation Studies.
This new version is based on the 1 October 2023 snapshots from Scopus, updated to end of citation year 2022. The updated database provides standardized information on citations, h-index, co-authorship-adjusted hm-index, citations to papers in different authorship positions, and a composite indicator.
Dr. Ong Wee Jun Named 2023 Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Wee Jun from School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia was named 2023 Highly Cited Researcher by Clarivate (Cross-Field), as one of the 11 awardees across Malaysia this year.
Boasting a publication of 138, an H-Index of 59, and a total citation of 17,005, Dr. Ong Wee Jun has been in the list for 5 consecutive years. Among all his publications, 25 of his works were selected as Web of Science Top 1% Highly Cited Paper.
The Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers List recognizes individuals who have demonstrated significant and far-reaching impact in their respective research fields. In 2023, only 6,849 scholars from 67 nations and regions received this prestigious honor.
Dr. Haw Choon Yian Receives Private Education Excellence Awards 2023
Ts. Dr. Haw Choon Yian from the Department of New Energy Science and Engineering, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, was awarded “National Outstanding Young Educator” at the Private Education Excellence Awards 2023.
Held on 10 August 2023 by Private Education Cooperative of Malaysia (Educoop), the event aims to recognize outstanding private educators from all private institutions in Malaysia under the categories of teaching, science, arts and design, engineering, research and innovation, and humanities.
This is the third time that XMUM faculty members have won the Private Education Excellence Awards. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tan Swee Tiam and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Wee Jun were honored as “National Outstanding Researcher” and “National Outstanding Young Researcher” in 2022, while Prof. Huang Nay Ming and Assoc. Prof. Ong Wee Jun received the award of “National Outstanding Researcher” and “National Outstanding Reviewer” in 2019.
XMUM Students Win Two Silver and Five Bronze Prizes from the 8th China International College Students’ Internet+ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition
Students from Xiamen University Malaysia have received a total of 7 awards at the 8th China International College Students’ Internet+ Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition, including 2 Silver Prizes and 5 Bronze Prizes.
With the theme of “Dare to Differ, Dare to Win” the competition attracted 14.5 million participants and 3.4 million projects from 4,554 colleges and universities across 108 countries and regions. This is the 6th time that XMUM has participated in the competition, taking home a total of 38 awards including 1 Gold, 8 Silver, and 29 Bronze prizes.
This competition is organized by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, which aims to encourage colleges and universities to strengthen the cultivation of innovative and entrepreneurial talents, exchange innovative ideas and inspire entrepreneurship, and create a better future for the world.
XMUM Establishes Partnership with the University of Auckland
Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) formed a partnership with the University of Auckland (UOA) on 2 March 2023, establishing a Postgraduate Study Pathway to broaden students’ overseas experience.
The partnership provides XMUM engineering students with the opportunity to further their studies in the Master of Engineering Studies and the Master of Engineering programmes at UOA. Students are able to explore and enhance their academic careers at a world-class university.
In the near future, this partnership will be continued with a greater variety of choices in the field of engineering, providing students with better opportunities to enrich their personal experience through the lens of education.
Currently, XMUM is partnered with 19 universities across Europe, North America, Australia, and Asia.
XMUM Signs MOU with NanoMalaysia & NanoQuartz under Biomass Innovation Circular Economy Programme
Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with NanoMalaysia Berhad & NanoQuartz Sdn Bhd on 16 February 2023, for the cooperation under the Biomass Innovation Circular Economy Programme (BICEP).
The MOU aims to strengthen the progressive trilateral relationships and cooperation under the BICEP between the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), NanoMalaysia Berhad - as the leading agency for the commercialization of nanotechnology and advanced solutions - and Xiamen University Malaysia.
With the aim to capsulize and spur Malaysia’s economic prospect, BICEP is a government initiative for the production of valuable advanced materials with agricultural biomass waste.
The MOU was signed by Dr. Rezal Khairi Ahmad, Chief Executive Officer of NanoMalaysia Berhad, Dr. Daniel Bien, Director of NanoQuartz Sdn. Bhd. and Prof. Wang Ruifang, the President of XMUM.
YB Tuan Chang Lih Kang, the Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation of Malaysia, witnessed the ceremony.
XMUM Campus Career Fair 2023 Connects Talent with Industry
XMUM Campus Career Fair 2023 was successfully held on 29 November 2023, attracting over 2,300 students to explore career prospects and networking opportunities.
This year, 68 top industry leaders - such as Huawei, Vivo, Genting, Public Bank, Agoda, Shopee, Grant Thornton, Watson’s and more - set up booths at the fair and provided more than 1500 employment opportunities and 900 internship placements to XMUM students and graduates, covering a range of industries from finance to business, IT, engineering, etc.
Organized annually by XMUM Career Services Office, the event provided a vibrant hub of interactions between students and company representatives, allowing students to gain firsthand insights into various industries, discuss potential career trajectories, and establish meaningful connections with professionals.
