Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon and NESE Students Publish in Resources, Conservation and Recycling

2023-09-25

The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates Phuang Zhen Xin, Kyle Sebastian Mulya, Hoy Zheng Xuan, and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin from the Department of New Energy Science and Engineering, School of Energy and Chemical Engineering for their recent research article published in the Resources, Conservation and Recycling, an SCI Q1 journal with the latest impact factor of 13.2.

The paper entitled Moving towards plastic waste circularity: Redefining extended producer responsibility with externality consideration via P-graph-life cycle optimization framework proposes a novel P-graph-life cycle optimization integrated framework which optimizes the synergistic effect between externality costs from environmental damages (i.e., human health, ecosystem quality, resource scarcity) and budget cost of plastic waste management. This integrated optimization framework can flexibly generate multiple optimal pathways for plastic waste management with externality consideration, allowing stakeholders to delegate cost-bearing responsibilities for highly feasible Extended Producer Responsibility scheme formulation.

This integrated framework fulfils Sustainable Development Goal 12 by implementing plastic waste circularity with the support of externality consideration in the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme.

Methodology harmonization between life-cycle concept and P-graph optimization to strategize optimal plastic waste circularity solutions for the Extended Producer Responsibility scheme

Phuang Zhen Xin: “Completing a project which is a literal epitome of my research interest is one of the most cherished things in the second year of my PhD journey. My gratitude towards my research supervisor, Dr. Vincent Woon and my talented research peers is beyond words. The research idea would have remained abstract without their dedicated efforts and support. Integrating P-graph optimization and the life-cycle concept for plastic waste circularity assessment reveals the unleashed possibilities in further advancing plastic waste management in Malaysia. Upon the publication of this research work, I hope that the readers will understand better plastic waste circularity and the importance of this concept in creating betterment for the society.”

Kyle Sebastian Mulya: “I am truly grateful for the opportunity to delve into the integration of P-graph with life cycle assessment in the waste management industry, and it has been a fascinating experience in this field of study. Dr. Vincent's unwavering guidance has been instrumental in shaping our project. I want to thank Zhen Xin for welcoming me into her project and Zheng Xuan for our collaborative effort in turning our vision into a published reality. With our publication, I hope future readers find valuable insights and inspiration in our work, thus propelling advancements in the field of waste management.”

Hoy Zheng Xuan: “The journey was arduous yet rewarding, revealing both my resilience and areas to grow. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all involved for the invaluable opportunity to contribute to this enriching collaborative endeavor.”
