With the aim of maximizing the yield and quality of black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) fractions, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) with BioLoop Sdn Bhd on 3 January 2023.

This collaborative project aims to investigate the yield and quality of BSFL oil and defatted meals to maximize the utilization of BSFL while solving the problems of global food and feed stress as well as waste management.

The MOA was signed by Mr. Mah Jun Kit, CEO & CoFounder of BioLoop Sdn Bhd, Mr. Ng Tian Shun, Head of Finance of BioLoop Sdn Bhd, Prof. Wang Hui Qiong, Assistant President of XMUM and Dr. Kua Yin Leng, Assistant Professor (Chemical Engineering) of XMUM.

BSFL is a biorecycling organism that is able to convert large quantities and broad varieties of organic pollutants and substrates in food or animal wastes to edible protein and fats during their growth. It contains more than 28% of lipids and more than 40% of proteins. Due to its high-quality nutritional content and waste treatment performance, BSFL can be used as future foods and alternative animal feed while reducing the environmental pollution.
