Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon and NESE Postgraduate Student Publish in Journal of Environmental Management

The Research and Postgraduate Centre congratulates the masters student Chin Min Yee and Assoc. Prof. Ts. Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin from XMUM New Energy and Science Engineering (NESE) programme for publishing a research article in Journal of Environmental Management (Q1, IF:8.91).

In the paper entitled Policy-driven municipal solid waste management assessment using relative quadrant eco-efficiency: A case study in Malaysia, the authors developed a relative quadrant life cycle eco-efficiency indicator to evaluate the eco-efficiency performance of the policy-driven solid waste treatment scenarios in terms of their environmental and economic aspects. The assessed solid waste treatment scenarios involved the waste management targets proposed in Malaysia's policies, such as the 12th Malaysia Plan (2021-2025), the Green Technology Master Plan (2017-2030), and the ambitious goals of sustainable waste management. Among all the scenarios of various solid waste facilities with different configurations, results showed that scenarios with the higher configuration of mechanical material recovery facility (commonly known as recycling) have a higher eco-efficiency performance than other scenarios. Quantitative policy recommendations were also provided in this article to facilitate the policymakers in setting more quantifiable strategic action plans for Malaysia's municipal solid waste management.

This research was conducted in collaboration with Prof. Lee Chew Tin from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, funded by the Global Development Network (GDN) and the Ministry of Finance, Government of Japan, through the Japanese Award for Outstanding Research on Development Research Grant.

Min Yee: I would like to express my utmost gratitude and appreciation to my supervisor, Dr. Vincent, and the project mentor, Prof. Lee from UTM, for providing valuable advice throughout this project. Working on this project has urged me to come across various national policies and provided me with more insight into waste management at the national level. This project has taught me to think practically – always consider the local conditions, needs, and real-world situations. I'm truly excited to have an opportunity to conduct such impactful research. I hope our findings and recommendations to be involved in the national municipal solid waste management decision one day.
