XMUM Students Stand Out at Simon Marais Mathematics Competition

For the third year in a row, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) has achieved outstanding performance at Simon Marais Mathematics Competition, an annual international inter-university mathematics contest. During this year’s competition, XMUM won Malaysia’s top score in Individual, Pair, and University categories.

Held on 12 October 2019, the competition attracted over 900 participants from 52 universities across the Asia Pacific region, including Australian National University, the University of Melbourne, the University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Nanyang Technological University, National University of Singapore, etc.

Second-year student Hong Khay Boon finished at the 19th place among 393 competitors in the individual category, allowing him to win the title of the “Best Individual Entry” among all the Malaysia participants. Liu Xuan and Zhou Zhidan, another two sophomores from XMUM, won “Best Pair Entry” among Malaysian contestants. All these three students are currently pursuing their undergraduate studies at XMUM’s Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Programme.

Other XMUM students that have achieved outstanding results at this competition are: Chen Zihang, Ong Giap Siong and Ho Wei Lam who took part in the individual category; Mao Yihan, Shi Minghao, Chen Junyu, Du Jiaxuan, Ma Yawen, Qu Fangyu, Li Yujiang, Liu Junbing, Teoh Chao Dun and Tio Ruchen who took part in the pair category. All of them have helped XMUM to secure the title of “Top Performing University in Malaysia”.

The BA in Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Programme at XMUM was started in September 2018, with a strong curriculum emphasizing on both theory and real-life application.
