First XMUM Mathematics Competition Successfully Held

With the purposes of promoting students’ interests in mathematics and training more experts in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) for Malaysia, Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) has organized the first XMUM Mathematics Competition. This competition serves as a key platform to uncover students’ mathematical talents and encourage them to become mathematicians in the future.

Held on 23 June 2019, the competition have attracted 258 students from 24 higher education institutions and high schools.

Takeda Shigenori championed the Open Category, while Sew Qian Hong from Chong Hwa Independent High School Kuala Lumpur was the first runner-up. Thai Zhen Leng from Chong Hwa Independent High School Kuala Lumpur and Chan Tin Ping were both named second runners-up.  

In the XMUM category, Hong Khay Boon from Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Program topped the chart, while Chen Junyu, Liu Xuan, Zhu Qianxi and Ho Wei Lam were named runners-up.

A prize giving ceremony was held at XMUM on 21 July 2019. After the awards presenting ceremony, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Darren Ong Chung Lee gave a talk titled “Unsolved Problems in Mathematics”. This talks introduced some of the major unsolved problems mathematicians are pursuing today in a non-technical way, explained why they are important, and reported current progress on the solution.
