A group of Indonesian high school students and parents, mainly from Tangerang, Gading Serpong, and Jakarta, had an insightful glimpse of campus life when they visited Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) on 8 November 2018.
Following a brief introduction by Ms. Lestari Surianto, the university’s International Student Recruitment Assistant Manager, Prof. Ni I-Hsun from China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences shared his work experience in various marine related fields including fishery, zoology and marine observation, wildlife conservation, and biological resources. Prof. Ni advised the group on course planning, suggesting them take personal interests, talent and market trends into consideration.
Dr. Darren Ong Chung Lee from Mathematics and Applied Mathematics Programme also attended the sharing session. According to him, this discipline helps to train people’s ability in “analysing and drawing conclusions, proposing recommendations or precise decisions from tons of data”, which are essential skills for most jobs including actuaries, data scientists, statisticians, financial analysts, computer scientists, programmer, etc.
After the inspiring sessions, the group visited the university’s cutting edge facilities and toured the 3-storey canteen and well-equipped hostels.
