Overview

The Mathematics and Applied Mathematics programme at Xiamen University (XMU), offered by the School of Mathematical Sciences (SMS), was introduced in 1922, among the first batch of programmes at XMU. The world famous mathematician, Chen Jingrun, once studied in this programme from 1949 until 1953. In the “2018 Best Universities for Mathematics” published by US News and World Report, XMU was ranked 81st globally, and 10th among the universities in China. The discipline of mathematics at XMU has been ranked among the top 1% globally in Essential Science Indicators (ESI) since 2014, and the ranking has been improving every year. Currently SMS has 89 full-time faculty members and 14 distinguished visiting professors, among whom 97% are PhD holders. From 2013 to 2017, SMS has secured a total of 117 research grants from the National Natural Science Foundation, amounting to RMB 47.24 million. 551 SCI journal papers were published by the School faculty from 2013 to 2016. SMS also publishes the Journal of Mathematical Study, and jointly publishes the SCIE journal, East Asian Journal of Applied Mathematics, with Global Science Press. Benefiting from the cooperation with various universities around the world, it hosts more than 100 mathematicians to XMU annually.

The Mathematics and Applied Mathematics programme at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) draws on and benefits from the excellent educational resources of SMS. We provide high quality education in the area of mathematics and applied mathematics for those who wish to pursue or further advance their careers in areas which requires advanced knowledge and skills of mathematical sciences. With a balance between theories and applications, we are dedicated to equipping students with analytical, critical thinking and problem solving skills which enable them to adapt to the ever-changing world. Besides the solid foundation laid by the core subjects, students can choose from a wide range of sub-disciplines to focus on in order to prepare themselves for various career paths.
