Twenty-two senior university management personnel from 13 top universities in Malaysia and China gathered at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) on Jan 5, 2018, to participate in the “Workshop on the Opportunities and Challenges of Cooperative Education under the Backdrop of the Belt and Road Initiative”. Two representatives from Chinese Embassy in Malaysia, Director of Cultural Office Mr. Zhang Jiexin and Ms. Wang Shuang, also attended the event.

Organized by the Society for International Human Resources Development based in Beijing, this annual workshop is an opportunity for top Chinese universities’ directors of international cooperation to meet with their counterparts in foreign countries. Last year’s workshop was held at Free University of Berlin in Germany.

In her opening remarks, Dr. Zhang Ying, the Assistant President of XMUM, pointed out that this workshop was held to offer front-line educators a platform to discuss and reflect on issues related to cooperative education, especially the difficulties they have encountered during their management of university internationalization.

Ms. Li Xiaowen introduced the milestones and development of XMUM and shared the opportunities and challenges that the university is currently facing. Participants showed a great interest in the lessons drawn from the establishment of the first Chinese university oversea campus.

Subsequently, attendees shared the internationalization experience of their respective universities, exchanged insightful observations and comments, and explored a number of related issues.

Workshop participants come from 7 Malaysia universities, i.e. University of Malaya, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Malaysia Terengganu, Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman, Sunway University and XMUM, and 6 Chinese universities, i.e. Peking University, Beijing Normal University, Fudan University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, SUN YAT-SEN University, and Xiamen University.
