XMUM Conducts Fire Drill to Strengthen Campus Safety

May 30,2017
Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) is committed to comply with fire safety regulation, which requires that premises used as workplace must have fire safety arrangements in place. In compliance with this, a fire drill was conducted in the afternoon of 16 May 2017 at A5 Building of XMUM.

Present to witness the drill were Senior Assistant Fire Commissioner, Azmi bin Osman, Director, Deputy Director and Division Assistant Director of Selangor Fire and Rescue Department, Head of Zone 5 South Selangor, Head of Fire and Rescue KLIA, as well as senior officers and staff from various related agencies. President of XMUM, Professor Wang Ruifang, was honoured to welcome them and very grateful for the assistance given.

The fire drill started when the fire alarm went off. A rescue scenario was created under the supervision of Mr Yahya, Head of Fire Rescue KLIA. The scenario was an incident that had occurred in one of the laboratory rooms which caused the fire to start at the level 2 of A5 Building. In the scenario, two casualties were designed, one with a broken leg and the other with breathing difficulties. While waiting for the Fire Brigade to arrive, immediate rescue was needed and this was conducted efficiently by our Emergency Response Team (ERT). A moment later, the Fire Brigade arrived to put out the fire. Then the Fire Commander reported and handed over the case to the Fire Brigade. Everyone had safely gathered at the Assembly Point in record time. The Floor Monitors, i.e. representatives elected for each floor of the building, had all the occupants accounted for.

The exercise aimed to raise safety awareness among the students and staff of the university and focused on the procedures and measures for dealing with emergency situations and the effectiveness of the emergency control systems. Practicing scheduled fire drills will help ensure that individuals have the knowledge to safely escape a fire without injuring themselves or others. In addition to that, the drills help to educate and remind the individuals of the proper evacuation procedure and to test the fire safety facilities.

XMUM maintenance, logistics, security and medical teams worked hard to ensure the smooth operation of this event and the duly implementation of relevant safety features and procedures. Special thanks go to our students for their compliance and cooperation.
