At XMUM’s new marine labs, teaching takes a step forward

May 11,2017
China-ASEAN College of Marine Sciences recently unveiled new laboratories at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM). With a total investment of RM17 million, six laboratories, including Microscopy Laboratory, General Chemistry Laboratory, Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, Bioinformatics Laboratory, Cell and Molecular Biology Laboratory, Microbial Laboratory and Analytical Chemistry Laboratory, were officially put into use.

All the six laboratories are outfitted with a wide range of equipment, providing a high level of versatility and support for marine studies. For instance, General Physics Laboratory is equipped with PH meter, spectrometer, melting point apparatus and reverse osmosis water filter. Microscopy Laboratory is equipped with 35 sets of stereo and compound microscopes, each of which is installed with an interactive image analysis system.

“Such fully equipped labs will lead to good morale for students and teachers alike. It will also help to create a cohesive environment for learning,” said Dr. Hui Yew Woh, who oversees the marine labs. “I can feel that both students and lecturers are very excited to come here for classes.”

“We not only teach students basic knowledge and skills,” said Dr. Yeap Swee Keng, an associate professor teaching marine biotechnology. “We will also involve them in XMUM’s marine projects so that they can gain an understanding of what it is like to be involved in major projects. It is our hope that the knowledge, skills and experience students acquire in the lab will become stepping stones to their future success.”

More sophisticated equipment, such as atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS), inductively coupled plasma spectroscopy (ICP), gas chromatography (GC), high pressure liquid chromatography(HPLC), flow cytometer and multi-function plate reader, will be purchased soon for use in the advanced laboratories.

“Our marine labs will soon become a veritable hive of scientific activities,” said Dr. Yeap. “All of us will be proud of it.”
