XMUM Hosts the 1st International Conference on Energy Materials (ICEM2021)

The 1st International Conference on Energy Materials (ICEM2021) was successfully held online from 5 to 8 November 2021. This event forms part of the celebration for the Centenary of Xiamen University (XMU) as well as the 5th Anniversary of Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM).

This 4-day event is organized by XMUM School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, with the theme of “Empowering Science and Technology for a Sustainable Future”. Over 150 participants, including keynote and invited speakers from China, Australia, European Union, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Singapore, United Kingdom, and United States, etc. attended the conference.

Prof. Wang Ruifang (President of XMUM), Prof. Xie Zhaoxiong (Dean of the College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, XMU), Prof. Chen Binghui (Dean of the School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, XMUM) and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Wee Jun (ICEM2021 Conference Chair) attended the opening ceremony and gave speeches.

"This conference could not be more relevant as world leaders are discussing the urgent actions needed to address climate change at COP 26 in Glasgow and as the world is desperately in need of sustainable sources of energy to power the post-pandemic recovery," said Prof. Wang Ruifang during his opening address.

The event is composed of six symposia, each with a topic related to cutting-edge technology in the field of material science. Prof. Yang Peidong from University of California, Berkeley, Prof. Dai Hongjie from Stanford University, Prof. Liu Bin from National University of Singapore, Prof. Markus Antonietti from Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces, and Prof. John A. Rogers from Northwestern University gave lecturers as plenary speakers.

Prof. Zheng Nanfeng from Xiamen University and Tan Kah Kee Innovation Laboratory, the event’s co-organizer and platinum sponsor, gave a public talk in the third day to introduce the Tan Kah Kee Innovation Laboratory.

In a series of talks, conference sponsors, including Oxford Instruments (Novatiq Scientific Sdn. Bhd.), Pentas Flora Sdn. Bhd., Elsevier, Royal Society of Chemistry, Clarivate and Frontiers, shared the latest development in the industry.

During the final day,a poster award ceremony was held to recognize Ng Sue Faye, Joel Foo Jie and Lau Hui Shen from XMUM and Dr. Chai Pui Vun from UCSI University for their great posters and presentations. The cash prizes are sponsored by the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The organizing committee, led by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ong Wee Jun, has started to work for the event since January 2020. By bringing together top scientists, researchers, engineers and specialists from all over the world to discuss the latest scientific innovations and practices in energy materials and relative fields, this conference provides an unique opportunity to exchange ideas, share experiences and interact across academia and industry.

The Committee wishes to extend their special thanks to all the sponsors, including Pentas Flora Sdn. Bhd., Tan Kah Kee Innovation Laboratory, Master Jaya Environment Sdn. Bhd., Frontiers, Ancom Crop Care Sdn. Bhd., Consistent Reach Sdn. Bhd., Oxford Instruments, PLT Scientific Sdn. Bhd., Novatiq Scientific Sdn. Bhd. and Royal Society of Chemistry, for their kind contribution and support.

ICEM2023 will be held from 10 to 13 November in 2023. For more information, please visit the Conference’s official website and social media platforms (Facebook, Linkedin & Youtube Channel)or approach the committee via email at icem2021@xmu.edu.my
