5 Minute Research Project Presentation Competition


What is it for?

For all actively enrolled XMUM postgraduates (PGs) to talk about their research to a multidisciplinary audience in no more than 5 mins. It is an excellent opportunity to learn how to connect with research-based businesses or with researchers from different fields!


First prize (2 winners) – RM 300

Second prize (4 winners) – RM 200 each Third prize (6 winners) – RM 100 each


  • Open to all postgraduate students (PGs).

  • Only Power Point or PDF is permitted.

  • Slide transitions, animations, electronic media are allowed.

  • Additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted.

  • Presentations are limited to 5 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 5 minutes are disqualified.

  • Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their presentation.

  • Each presentation must be worded for a multidisciplinary audience; technical terms must be clearly defined by the competitor.

  • The presentation files must be submitted 3 days prior to the competition.

What will the judges be looking for?

Content: Clear explanation of background, significance of research, novelty? Clear explanation of research methods, results/findings (if any), conclusion and outcomes.

Oral Communication: Clear delivery in a language appropriate for a multidisciplinary audience?

Convey passion for the research, maintained audience’s attention?

Visual communication: Power Point slide / PDF was well defined and enhanced the presentation? Engaging and effective use of visual communication e.g. props and/or PowerPoint Slide.
