School of Foundation Studies Marks its Fifth Anniversary

The School of Foundation Studies was established to provide pre-university level academic programmes to secondary school leavers so that they can fulfill their dreams of pursuing tertiary studies via a seamless articulation pathway. We offer two pre-university level programmes, namely the Foundation in Science and the Foundation in Arts and Social Science programmes, all fully accredited by the Malaysian Qualifications Agency. Graduates of the two programmes may choose to either enter undergraduate studies at Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) or join other institutions of higher learning.

Since its inception in April 2016, the School of Foundation Studies has welcomed 2,777 local students and 105 international students. As of today, a total of 2,426 students have completed their course. About 80% of our foundation programme graduates have stayed on to continue their studies at XMUM.

From April 2016 to April 2021, the number of our administrative staff increased from three to eight (including three laboratory officers), while our academic staff more than doubled in numbers from 12 to 28, including eight doctoral degree holders, 19 master’s degree holders and one bachelor’s degree holder.

Being entrusted with the responsibility of preparing secondary school leavers for tertiary education, we place much importance on equipping our students with the necessary communication, language and interpersonal skills in addition to the relevant subject-matter knowledge. We encourage our students to participate in science fairs and industrial visits and to engage with the outside community via out-of-classroom projects.

As we celebrate the centenary of the establishment of Xiamen University, School of Foundation Studies marks its fifth anniversary. As a budding school with ample room for growth and improvement, we believe our future looks brighter by the day as we gradually build up our reputation and start to draw accolades from the public.
