XMUM Undergraduate Receives Merit for Best Presenter Award in SPIL’20 Conference

The Research Management Center congratulates Phuang Zhen Xin, a final-year New Energy Science and Engineering (NESE) student, for obtaining Merit for Best Presenter Award in the 4th Sustainable Process Integration Laboratory (SPIL) Scientific Conference. The Conference was held from 18 to 20 November 2020. 15 Best Presenter Awards (1st Prize, 2nd Prize, 3rd Prize, and 12 Merits) were selected from 209 oral presentations.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this international conference was conducted virtually where the presenters were required to upload pre-recorded presentation video and conduct Q&A session via a virtual conference platform.

This year, the conference received a total of 222 abstracts and 209 oral presentations from 56 countries including the US, the UK, Germany, France, Denmark, China, South Korea, Japan, and Australia. 378 participants from industries and universities, such as University of Oxford, Carnegie Mellon University, Tsinghua University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Tohoku University, University of Manchester, joined this conference and exchanged knowledge via the virtual conference platform.

During the conference, Zhen Xin presented her final year project work entitled “Using Life Cycle Assessment to Unlock the Embodied Environmental Impacts of Palm Biodiesel Production in Malaysia”, which was conducted under the supervision of Assist. Prof. Dr. Vincent Woon Kok Sin from NESE. The study aims to evaluate the environmental hotspots of upstream processes of palm biodiesel production using life cycle assessment methodology. The outcome of this study will provide quantitative guidance for palm oil industry stakeholders in identifying the sub-process with high environmental impact, as well as in designing a more environmentally friendly palm biodiesel production process. Her presentation video is one of the top 10 most viewed presentations of the conference.

Below is the testimony from Zhen Xin:

“It is indeed my honour to be acknowledged in this conference. During my final year project, there were several times when I found the data collection process challenging due to a lack of resources and insufficient knowledge regarding the palm biodiesel technology. Fortunately, Dr. Vincent Woon guided me on my research patiently. I would like to thank him for giving me support in resolving the challenges faced during the research work and helping me become a more independent learner.”

SPIL Scientific Conference is a yearly conference organized by SPIL Brno University of Technology and supported by the EU project Sustainable Process Integration Laboratory – SPIL, funded as project No. CZ.02.1.01/0.0/0.0/15 003/0000456, by Czech Republic Operational Programme Research and Development, Education, Priority 1: Strengthening capacity for quality research. Every year, international researchers, students, and industry representative are gathered for knowledge exchange, and world-leading researchers are invited as the speakers to provide up-to-date insight on their respective fields of expertise. This year, winners of the Best Presenter Award from this conference are invited to submit a paper to Special Issue of Energy or Clean Technologies and Environmental Policy.
