XMUM Team Won Bronze Medal at ICPC Malaysia Programming Contest

On Saturday 27 April, the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Malaysia al-Khawarizmi National Programming Contest 2019 took place at International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM). Three teams from XMUM entered the contest and all of them ranked among the top seven, out of 36 competitors from across Malaysia.

Scoring third overall, team “Lazyzzz” won XMUM a bronze medal.

In the gruelling 5-hour long contest, teams of three competed against the clock to solve a set of complex problems using algorithmic programming skills. The team that had solved most problems with fewest attempts using least cumulative time was declared the champion.

XMUM team -- “Lazyzzz”, formed by three second-year students from Software Engineering Programme, ranked third place and won a bronze medal. The other two XMUM teams “Test” and “Void” ranked fourth and seventh among all participating teams respectively. All XMUM teams are qualified for entering the Asia Pacific and Southeast regional contests.

Dr. Xiao Han, the Coordinator of XMUM ICT Programmes, coached XMUM teams and accompanied them throughout the competition. He attributed the good results to the concerted efforts made by the students.

“This is the result of a great deal of hard work by the students who attended the 45-hour training sessions in March enthusiastically. My plan now is to hold a mini competition every two weeks to create a competitive environment where the students may engage in optimal problem solving while practising mental endurance,” said Dr. Xiao.

“ICPC motivates the students to code. As the questions are relevant to real-life projects, preparations for the competition improve the students’ future professional competency. In addition, achievements in this prestigious contest are very useful for job and graduate school applications. Top software companies often offer internship and employment opportunities to medallists of the competition.”

XMUM teams consisted of:

Team “Lazyzzz”: (from left) Zhang Xinming, Li Xia, Zhang Zhichao; all coming from Software Engineering Programme.

Team “Test”: (from right) Bai Haotian from Computer Science and Technology Programme; Xu Jiayun from Software Engineering Programme;  Zheng Ziyue from Digital Technology Programme; and coach Dr. Xiao Han.

Team “Void”: (from left) Ng Jing Jie from Software Engineering Programme; Wu Jiani from Computer Science and Technology Programme; and Eilsen Law Yi Sheng from Software Engineering Programme.

The ICPC Malaysia al-Khawarizmi, organized by the Kulliyyah of ICT of IIUM, is a national level contest that aims to foster creativity, teamwork and innovation in building new software programs as well as to enable students to test their ability to perform under pressure. This year, team “whyAreWeHere (Moscow_plz)” from IIUM and team “readTaco” from University of Malaya (UM) ranked top two in the contest.

The competition scoreboard is available online:

The ICPC traces its roots to a programming competition held at Texas A&M University in 1970. Up until 1989, the contest mainly included participants from the USA and Canada. Since 1989, the competition has operated under the auspices of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and since 1997, IBM has been the general sponsor of the event. Today, the ICPC is one of the most prestigious intellectual competitions for young programmers from all over the world.
