Dr. Ong Wee Jun Receives Young Researcher Award from IChemE Malaysia

2019-01-08

The Office of Research and Innovation congratulates Assistant Professor Dr. Ong Wee Jun on receiving the Young Researcher Award from the Institute of Chemical Engineering (IChemE), Malaysia. The IChemE, headquartered in United Kingdom, established the annual awards since year 1994 to celebrate excellence and achievement in chemical, biochemical, and process industries. Her Royal Highness Queen of Perak Darul Ridzuan, Tuanku Zara Salim, a chemical engineer herself, presented Dr. Ong with a trophy and a certificate on 15 October 2018. This award recognises the individual who can best demonstrate the impact of his or her research in helping solve present environmental, economic or social issues.

The award winner from the IChemE Malaysia was automatically shortlisted for the IChemE Global Awards. On 1 November 2018, Dr. Ong’s research was highly commended internationally at the IChemE Global Awards in Manchester, United Kingdom (UK).

Dr. Ong was highly commended for the “Young Researcher Award” at the 2018 IChemE Global Awards in UK.

Dr. Ong was commended for his excellent work in research in year 2018. His research team had successfully mimicked the photosynthesis process in plants by engineering a photocatalyst that can use solar light to split water and reduce carbon dioxide into energy-rich fuels. Dr. Ong stated the significance of his research by revealing his perspective on the future direction of the energy conversion:

“Climate change is the critical issue facing the world at present. Searching for alternative supply of clean energy and enhancing the energy efficiency are of utmost importance. As such, solar energy conversion via photocatalysis and photoelectrocatalysis represents a magnificent platform toward a sustainable future. Successful development of the research would bring environmental and economic benefits, made possible by reducing the environmental impacts while increasing chemical resources.”

The trophy and certificate – IChemE Malaysia Young Researcher Award – presented by HRH Tuanku Zara Salim to Dr. Ong Wee Jun.

Dr. Ong Wee Jun obtained his BEng in 2012, and PhD (chemical engineering) in 2016 from Monash University. He joined the Institute of Materials Research and Engineering at Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR) in 2016 as staff scientist. Dr. Ong has been working as Assistant Professor in School of Energy and Chemical Engineering, Xiamen University Malaysia, since 2018. His research interests encompass the development of hybrid nanostructures for various energy and environmental applications via heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis (i.e. photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, electrocatalysis, and photothermal catalysis). The Institute of Chemical Engineers (IChemE) aims to be the organization of choice for chemical engineers. It has an international membership that exceeds 40,000 in around 100 countries. It promotes competence and a commitment to best practice, advances the discipline for the benefit of society and supports the professional development of its members. IChemE is the only organisation to award Chartered Chemical Engineer and Professional Process Safety Engineer status.
