I. English Language Requirements

Applicants must have a minimum score of 120 out of 150 (or obtain at least 80 percent of the total score) in the English subject of the National College Entrance Examination (Gaokao).

Meanwhile, as required by the Ministry of Education (MOE) Malaysia, all international students (including students from China) must fulfil the specified English competency requirements for their intended undergraduate programmes within 12 months upon arrival in Malaysia, and only those who have fulfilled the requirements are allowed to officially start degree courses (including major core courses, major elective courses and general elective courses) (Note 1). The acceptable English language qualifications include IELTS (A), TOEFL, PTE Academic and MUET (Malaysian University English Test). Students shall submit the valid test result (Note 2) to XMUM no later than 2 weeks after the commencement of the September semester.

Note 1: Candidates without English proficiency test result can still be admitted to XMUM, but only those who have passed any of the English proficiency test can start their degree course.

Note 2: Validity periods of IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic and MUET are as follows:

IELTS, TOEFL and PTE Academic: 2 years after the test date.

MUET: 5 years from the date of the MUET result.

The English language proficiency requirements for undergraduate programmes in XMUM are detailed below:

Candidates are encouraged to sit for any of the recognized English proficiency tests (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic and MUET) as early as possible, so as to meet the English requirement and start degree courses in September 2019.

Students who fail to meet the specified English proficiency requirement within 2 weeks from the start date of the September semester are not allowed to officially enrol in degree courses (including major core courses, major elective courses and general elective courses) during that semester, and will be required to take language training courses instead. A failure to start degree course in September 2019 will lead to a delay in graduation. These students must fulfil the English proficiency requirement within 1 year of arrival in Malaysia and enrol in an undergraduate programme in one of the following intakes - February, April or September 2020.

II. English Training Programmes and Examination

For students who fail to meet the English proficiency requirements within the stipulated period, the English Language Education Centre (ELEC) of XMUM offers intensive preparatory workshops and enhancement classes specially designed for test takers of IELTS, MUET and PTE. Students are required to attend the English training courses and their attendance will be recorded. There will also be an online learning portal which can be used by students to enhance their English language skills and an English Lounge where students can get necessary assistance to pass the exams.

XMUM is an approved test centre for IELTS and MUET, providing students opportunities to sit for the tests on campus.
