English Language Requirements for International Students

To improve the English language proficiency of international students, effective from 2018, the Ministry of Higher Education, Malaysia (MOHE) requires all international students to achieve the specified English competency requirements for their intended undergraduate programmes within 12 months of arrival in Malaysia, and only those who have fulfilled the requirements are allowed to enrol in the academic programme. The acceptable English language qualifications include IELTS, TOEFL, PTE Academic and MUET.

The English language proficiency requirements for undergraduate programmes in Xiamen University Malaysia (XMUM) are detailed below:

To prepare our students to meet the requirements, the English Language Education Centre of Xiamen University Malaysia (“the Centre”) offers intensive preparatory workshops and enhancement classes for IELTS, MUET, and PTE, equipping them with the necessary skills to pass the exams. The Centre also uses online learning portals that allow students to set their own pace and learning goals. In addition, the English Lounge in XMUM serves as a platform to immerse students in an English-speaking environment and practise their listening and speaking skills.

So far, our students have achieved impressive results in a variety of tests. The Centre has obtained an overall pass rate of 90% for IELTS and 99% for MUET over the last 18 months. Over 90% of the first batch of Chinese students who have taken the IELTS test scored 6.0 or above.

XMUM is an approved test centre for IELTS, MUET and MUET-on-demand. This means students can sit for the tests in the university every month. The Centre is also in the process of obtaining the licence to be a PTE test centre so as to provide students with more options. The Centre will be with the students every step of their journey in English language learning, and is committed to providing a positive learning experience that equips, enhances, enables and empowers students to be competent and confident users of the English language.
